On Thursday, July 31st, Asheville NC based quartet The Snozzberries delivered a spirited show to an intimate crowd at The Deep Ellum Art Co. Currently on a headlining tour through the South, the prog-rock quartet has made a name for themselves with their high voltage live performances and exploratory psychedelic writing.

The evening started out with a rousing opening set from local psychedelic rap fusion band Electrik Ants. The Snozzberries–often affectionately referred to as “The Snozz”--took the stage soon after, swiftly bringing the energy in the room back up to a 10.

The group’s not afraid to have some fun, with tinges of high energy ska and mesmerizing rhythmic shifts being a common occurrence throughout the evening. There’s no shortage of technical prowess within the band either, with guitarist Ethan Heller performing ambitious riffs on his guitar while thrashing his hair, and bassist Josh Clark powerfully belting while performing demanding bass lines.

These jubilant bursts of energy and passion are evident throughout the bands’ entire catalogue, with almost every track the band played featuring moments of math rock tinged melodic explorations. Harmonies between the band's two lead vocalists Heller and Clark created small moments of beauty throughout the show, providing little moments of calm amidst the band's generally intense jam metal style.

The quartet played multiple original unreleased tracks, including an upcoming sequel to the band’s most popular song “Snitchin’ Randy,” aptly named “Snitchin’ Randy 2.” The band also paid homage to one of their biggest influences by playing a cover from iconic prog-rock band the Dixie Dregs.

The band’s dedication to their craft is evident, and their onstage attitude is triumphant. All in all, The Snozzberries put on an excellent show, providing Dallas with a taste of their addictive and energetic blending of metal, prog, and psychedelic rock.
